Shanthakumar Bannirchelvam and Sam Baker are building on the model developed by Resolution Fellow Shaan Gandhi to increase the life expectancy of Australia’s indigenous population by providing SMS health information specifically targeting substance abuse and maternal health. ‘Global Health Solutions’ is using the Ushahidi Platform to crowdsource the most relevant topics for each community based on their geography and chatter. Their team of physicians then broadcasts appropriate messaging to indigenous communities. Thus far, GHS has focused on gaining acceptance from the elders of the indigenous population, and on promoting user adoption. Shanthakumar is currently a Bachelor of Laws (LLB)/Bachelor of Economics (B. Econ) candidate at the University of Sydney, Australia and previously served as an Officer in the Singapore Armed Forces, and worked at the United Nations in the Economic and Social Council. Originally from San Francisco, Sam currently lives in Melbourne, Australia and is the Vice President of the Host Directorate at the World Model UN Conference of 2013, a Resolution Social Venture Challenge Host Conference.
