Gift, a senior at Bates College, a driven and energetic lady from Mombasa, Kenya. Both academic achievement and leadership skills won her entrance into one of the most prestigious schools in Africa – the African Leadership Academy (ALA) – in Johannesburg, South Africa. At ALA, Gift received several awards: ALA 2014 Dean’s Award; 2013 Bezos Scholar to attend the Aspen Ideas Festival. At Bates, Gift studies Chemistry, French and Public Health. Alongside her studies at Bates, Gift has worked as a chemistry peer tutor, psychology research assistant, a chemistry lab assistant and a residential assistant. Passionate about healthcare, Gift has volunteered summers with Clinton Health Access Initiative in Kenya and Swaziland as well as Jacaranda Health in Kenya. Her venture, Zawadi Healthcare Services, will drill a borehole so as to provide a safe and reliable source of water to a healthcare clinic and community in Kashani, Kenya. Also an entrepreneur, Gift is the co-director of a natural spice company- Chibundiro in Kenya. When not studying, Gift enjoys singing with her acapella group or volunteering at the local after-school programs.
