Jessica and Mauro Espinoza co-founded ‘Unidas’ in 2009 to empower survivors of gender-based violence in Mexico and Ghana. To assist in skill development, Unidas piloted a basic curriculum and training program to teach the women financial literacy and business skills needed to plan and operate successful microbusinesses and manage household finances. Unidas also explored opportunities for partnerships between women’s shelters and specialized microfinance institutions to give the women the opportunity to discover freedom through economic independence. In Mexico, Unidas successfully supported a women’s shelter to expand its own productive enterprise with the twin goal of generating employment opportunities for women ready to leave the shelter and ensure the financial sustainability of the shelter.
