Koku and his team will be creating an in-school debate program for high school students in Ghana to learn research, self-advocacy, persuasion, and public-speaking skills, while focusing on topics of social importance in their local areas. Building on a pilot, Koku hopes to engage 20 schools and over 1,000 students in the initial phase of his venture, bringing the educational power of debate competitions to an underserved population which has access to few extracurricular activities and opportunities for self-expression and learning these key skills outside the classroom setting. Koku is an impressive young man whose passion for this project came through intensely, and especially as he was overcome with emotion after winning the Fellowship.
