Bright Energy Africa (“BEA”) will create sustainable and economical fuel solutions for Tanzania. BEA converts agricultural waste into biomass charcoal fuel and distributes it as cooking briquettes. The founding team is leveraging proven kiln and briquette manufacturing equipment, but has created an innovative model of (1) leasing kilns to local farmers to make biomass char, (2) buying that char back from the farmers at a higher rate than the kiln lease, creating impact with the farmers, (3) employing farmers to run briquette fabricators in central locations, creating jobs, and (4) employing a commission-based workforce to sell the briquettes locally, providing a much cleaner-burning, sustainable, and readily delivered source of fuel than charcoal (which comes from deforestation and causes major health risks).
