BIO

Pumla Maswanganyi (Class 8) exists at the intersection of creativity and impact as a speculative artist and designer. Born in South Africa, Pumla has lived and worked in five continents, driven by a commitment to locally attuned yet globally resonant solutions.

Notably, Pumla is the primary author of the African Life-Centric Design (ALCD) principles, featured in AXA Insurance’s 2024 Foresight Report ‘100 Reasons to Love the Future.’ The ALCD framework integrates design with cultural heritage and ecological sustainability, emphasising principles like ‘Design as Ritual’ and ‘Recognising Origins’

Pumla’s innovative methods have attracted clientele for various services including strategy, creative direction and speaking. Clients and partners include: Mozilla, Soho House, Decorex Africa, the African Union, Qatar Foundation, the British Council, MTN among others. Her influence in creative industries, speculation and impact, is further recognised in her capacity as a jury member for prestigious awards like the Core 77 Global Design Awards, and funding programs for Roddenberry Foundation, Mozilla and ENACTUS to name a few.

As the founding principal of Maswanganyi, Muyanga + Co (MM+Co), Pumla democratises access to art and design, leveraging them for societal development. This philosophy is mirrored in her work as a director at by lue, where she creates experiences and products that embody the thesis: ‘today’s bold moves, are tomorrow’s beloved traditions’.

In essence, Pumla Maswanganyi uses her diverse skills and global experiences to create impactful, culturally resonant, and forward-thinking solutions. Her work exemplifies how creativity can drive social change, bridging the gap between tradition and innovation.
