Maria Daniela Castillo is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin – Madison, where she double majored in Environmental Sciences and Environmental Studies and pursuing a Certificate in Engineering for Energy Sustainability. She hopes to pursue further studies in Environmental Sciences and Sustainable Development. She has always been interested in recycling and reusing products, but she has noticed that everywhere she has been to, changing the mindset of trash as waste is incredibly difficult. While being in Semester at Sea and seeing the world from different perspectives, she also realized she has a great interest in women empowerment and child education. Her social venture, UpTica, is a venture that starts in a small village but hopes to upscale to the city, not only in Costa Rica but also in Colombia (her home country) and the United States.
