Laura Voicu is an ophthalmologist specializing in cataract, cornea transplant and glaucoma. She became interested in international work during high school when she visited Belize on a humanitarian house building project, and then revisited the same area on a mission as a medical student at Mount Sinai Medical Center. She later traveled to Liberia and then initiated a successful mission to Mongolia with an eye care and reconstructive surgery team, which is now a multi-specialty healthcare intervention expanding each year. While traveling to Rwanda with the Himalayan Cataract Project, she was impressed by the interdependence of public health and local economies. She is particularly interested in applications of technology to medicine, and simple, scalable interventions. She practices as an eye surgeon in the US, and volunteers her time developing eye care systems internationally.
