José Balza is a third-year medical student at the Universidad Central de Venezuela whose humanitarian vocation is driven by the mission to document the realities of vulnerable individuals. As an active member of the student community, he has been committed to expanding free healthcare services to rural settings and fostering English literacy in remote regions with high touristic potential. Through these endeavors, he identified a profound scarcity of data regarding the living conditions and health status of underserved populations. Following 4 years of participation in the Harvard National Model United Nations conference, José co-founded Infectus Research, a student-led training hub that addresses Venezuela’s critical research-skill gap and the decade-long lack of epidemiological data. Through AI-assisted workflows and peer-mentorship, Infectus empowers health-sciences students to produce locally relevant research outputs, promoting data availability and evidence-based action in vulnerable communities.
