Raunak Thakur is an undergraduate student at Berea College. She is an international student from Nepal and is studying computer science and mathematics. Her venture is called “Sulav Urja” and she plans to establish Bio Gas plant in southern plains of Nepal where most of the men are migrant workers. Growing up in Nepal it was very normal to face fuel crisis every now and then. Fuel was expensive and scarce. Firewood was the feasible resource but it led to severe environmental degradation. While cooking over open fires is damaging to health and to the environment, biogas provides a viable, sustainable alternative. The recent earthquake in Nepal has lowered the economic growth of the country from 6% to 2%. This has made the situation in Nepal even worse. Bio gas production is a comprehensive solution to all these problems.
